The Great Cataclysm Part By PM’s Pen
The Great Deluge: Religious Texts and Geobiology
In this part, we will attempt to understand the accounts of the Great Deluge found in religious texts alongside certain events in the fields of geology and biology.
The story of the beginning of a new creation; following a great deluge and survival via a ship; appears under various names in the scriptures of the world’s four or five major religions and ancient civilizations.
In Hindu tradition, the ‘Shatapatha Brahmana’ and the ‘Matsya Purana’ recount the story of Lord Vishnu assuming the ‘Matsya’ (fish) avatar. King Satyavrata (also known as Vaivasvata Manu) had a massive boat constructed. Pairs of all living creatures and the Vedas were kept safe within that boat, and Lord Vishnu, in the form of a fish, protected the vessel.
The story goes something like this: Once, King Satyavrata; who would later become Vaivasvata Manu; was performing a water offering in a river. Just then, a tiny fish found its way into his cupped hands along with the water.
The kind king placed the fish in his water vessel. Before long, the fish grew so large that first the vessel, then the pond, and finally even the river became too small for it.
When the king released the fish into the ocean, it appeared in the form of a gigantic golden fish. It warned King Manu that a great deluge was soon to strike the Earth.
Lord Vishnu, in the form of Matsya (the fish), instructed Manu to prepare a large boat and place within it seeds of all grains, medicinal herbs, and the Saptarishis (the seven sages). He further directed that, at the time of the great deluge, Manu should use the serpent Vasuki as a rope to tie the boat to the horn on the fish’s head.
During the Great Deluge, Lord Vishnu, in the form of Matsya, slew the demon Hayagriva, recovered the Vedas that had been stolen by him, and restored them to Lord Brahma. At the same time, He also preserved pairs of all living creatures within the boat.
References to the Great Deluge are also found in the Abrahamic religions; Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.
The story goes like this: due to the rise of evil and violence on Earth, God decided to destroy all life by bringing about a massive deluge.
Noah received instructions to take his family, along with male-female pairs of all the earth’s animals and birds, into the ark.
After the ark was completed, torrential rain fell for 40 days, submerging the entire earth. Only Noah’s ark remained afloat and safe.
After the waters receded, the ship came to a halt near Mount Ararat in Turkey, and it was from here that life on Earth began anew.
When the Great Flood ended and Noah emerged safely from the Ark with his family and the animals, God set the rainbow in the sky for the first time.
In the fields of geology and geography, “mass extinction events” refer to periods when Earth’s vast biodiversity and the majority of living species were wiped out forever within a very short span of time. There have been five such major mass extinction events in Earth’s history, known in scientific terms as “The Big Five.”
First event: 445 million years ago, during the Ordovician-Silurian extinction, 85% of species were wiped out due to a severe ice age (glaciation) and a massive drop in sea levels.
Second event: 375 million years ago, during the Late Devonian extinction, the oceans experienced oxygen depletion (anoxia) and global temperature fluctuations, resulting in the loss of 75% of species.
Third event: 252 million years ago, during the Permian-Triassic extinction (the “Great Dying”), massive volcanic eruptions in Siberia caused severe global warming and acid rain, resulting in the loss of 90% to 95% of species.
Fourth event: 201 million years ago, during the Triassic-Jurassic extinction, 80% of species were wiped out due to massive volcanic eruptions caused by the shifting of tectonic plates and a rise in carbon dioxide levels.
Fifth Event: 66 million years ago, during the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction, the impact of a massive asteroid with Earth led to the end of the dinosaurs, wiping out 75% of species.
One point worth noting in all the information gathered so far is that; whether in religious scriptures or in geological science; there is no record of the total annihilation of all life. According to scientific data, the third great cataclysm resulted in the highest loss of life, yet even then, the destruction was limited to 90 to 95% of species; 5 to 10% of life survived to carry their existence forward to the next generation.
We will continue to bring you more such insightful information. We look forward to your continued support.
